This course has been developed to raise awareness and knowledge of how disability impacts the lives of individuals living with disability and to provide strategies for interacting with people with disability to support inclusion and participation.

Learning outcomes

The purpose of this course is to build your awareness and confidence to provide services, and to work inclusively with people with disability.

Whether you are an employer, manager, colleague, volunteer, teacher, community worker or service provider, this course aims to build your disability awareness and confidence. Disability confidence is about:

  • understanding disability
  • knowing what people with disability can do
  • including people with disability
  • communicating positively, and
  • making sure we don't exclude people with disability because of misunderstandings, assumptions or ignorance.

In completing this course, you will develop an understanding of:

  • disability and diversity
  • the rights of people with disability
  • different causes and types of disability
  • communication tips and techniques
  • stereotypes and misconceptions, and
  • strategies to help you feel confident to work inclusively with people with disability.
