The Critiquing a Research Paper course will demonstrate the process of engaging in a structured and systematic approach of critiquing a research paper. Also covered is the use of the PICOTT acronym to develop appropriate clinical questions.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course the participant should be able to:

  • apply the 5 stages relating to evidence based practice to select appropriate information to inform clinical practice
  • demonstrate a knowledge of the important aspects of basic research concepts and apply them to critically analyse research papers and articles
  • engage in a systematic approach to critiquing a paper by asking the right questions and developing an individualised methodology
  • document critiques using a 5 step structured guideline
  • apply PICOTT to develop appropriate clinical questions on clinical practice concepts, and
  • apply a PICOTT model to identify which appropriate evidence to access on any subject.

Target Audience

Any clinical or non-clinical employee of a health institution who is required to have an understanding of breastfeeding practice. This can include non-clinical staff (such as cleaners, cooks etc) through to nurses, midwives, doctors and lactation consultants.

Accreditation

This course has been endorsed by the Australian College of Midwives and attracts 1 MidPLUS and 1R CERPs points upon successful completion.
