Cultural Considerations

The Cultural Considerations course will define and describe the major concepts of cultural issues relating to healthcare and how to effectively promote and support breastfeeding in different cultures.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course the participant should be able to:

  • describe and define the major concepts of cultural issues relating to health professionals
  • discuss the cultural issues inherent within their clinical practice
  • recognise how cultural influences affect the decision to breastfeed and impacts on breastfeeding behaviour, and
  • use their knowledge of cultural diversity to effectively promote and support breastfeeding in different cultures.

Target Audience

Any clinical or non-clinical employee of a health institution who is required to have an understanding of breastfeeding practice. This can include non-clinical staff (such as cleaners, cooks etc) through to nurses, midwives, doctors and lactation consultants.

Accreditation

This course has been endorsed by the Australian College of Midwives and attracts 1 MidPLUS and 1L CERPs point upon successful completion.
