Epidural and Spinal Anaesthesia for Childbirth

This course has been developed in partnership with IntelliLearn out of many years of presentations, workshops and on-line activities involving midwives, obstetricians, GP's and students.

This course covers key areas of Epidural and Spinal Anaesthesia in relation to childbirth including definitions associated conditions, and management. Upon successful completion of the associated quiz, 2 Australian College of Midwives (MidPLUS) points will be awarded.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course you should be able to:

  • understand the pathophysiology of epidural insertion and spinal anaesthesia
  • be aware of the essential requirements of performing observations when caring for a women with an epidural and / or spinal anaesthesia
  • be aware of the different types of medication used with an epidural and / or spinal anaesthesia
  • understand the significance of certain CTG changes relevant to epidurals
  • be aware of the essential requirements for appropriate case note documentation of the management of epidurals and / or spinal anaesthesia
  • use the 'Resource Materials' and feedback aspect of the self test facilities to ensure a satisfactory understanding of the key issues relating to epidurals and/or spinal anaesthesia, and
  • achieve a score in the ‘competency assessment quiz’ that enables the printing of your own "Certificate of Completion".
